a5c7b9f00b FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel's original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. In a retelling of the story of the Fantastic Four, begins when genius Reed Richards builds what he thinks is a teleportation device which he unveils at a science fair. And when it doesn't produce the results he said would happen, he's shun by everyone. But a visiting scientist, Franklin Storm thinks that Reed built the means to cross into another dimension. He offers Reed a scholarship so he goes to New York to work on it and he works with Storm's daughter Sue and his former student Victor Von Doom. Storm also brings in his son Johnny, a mechanic to help him. When Reed says it's done, Storm decides to send him, Sue, Johnny and Victor. Reed asks his best friend Ben Grimm to join him. When they get there, they're exposed to elements not native to their own, And when they return, they start to change or gain abilities. There isn't just one thing wrong with this movie. I don't know why Marvel has continuously failed to milk the Fantastic Four cow so far. I came to know Fox had something to do with this reboot, but hello! why not give everything back to Marvel that actually happens to have the golden goose and is on a super hit spree? The movie kicks off really well. By the time things reach its peak, where it actually matters it begins to dwindle. True colors of the flick are revealed when the director chooses to take a time jump instead of catching the heat of the moment. From there, right there! things go downhill.

SPOILERS AHEAD: It had somehow managed to nail inter-dimensional teleportation bit. The science made a silent promise to bring in characters like Galactus and the Silver Surfer in the long run, which appeared promising. But alas! Everything hit rock bottom when important scenes for e.g the trauma right after the change, finding about their power, and the science behind it etc. were simply skipped. Trank decided to go without the crucial scenes of the movie. That being said, editing was pathetic. Even the visual effects didn't appear out of the world. Sue Storm's power looked weirdly animated. Trank spent a lot of time building the characters in the first half that he forgot to cash in on them in the remaining, when they actually get their powers. When he was really supposed to hit home run, he decided to take a walk and that too a very mediocre one.

There is this scene where Johnny Storm takes out a drone which looks absolutely unreal and pathetic. It looked more like a video game. Likewise, couldn't help but yawn at Reed's and The Thing's fight scenes. There is really no focus in the movie, or a score that would rivet you, force you to pay attention.

Trying really hard to look at the bright side: One dialogue about scientists being overshadowed by people who are put to test was pretty good though. The world remembers only the pioneers who actually step into someone ideas, who wear the suits and not the brains behind it. Also, Doom's entrance and aftermath looks dope when he bursts open heads. Sheer gore there! The screenplay is poorly written. It was really disgusting to see the whole team struggle to get to their group name eventually. Where is the subtlety? You can pass this one, but if you are really curious you can still give it a go. Not really that badthey say.

You can also read my reviews at straightfromamovie.com The first fifteen, or maybe even twenty minutes (Reed and Benkids, the science fair) had me interested and made me think this film was going somewhere. But boy, was I wrong.

There were a lot of super long scenes that simply just made audiences lose interest, for example 'building the machine', or the aftermath of the journey through the 'other dimension'. Personally, I feel these scenes were extended just to make the movie longer.

I will admit I enjoyed the bit with Dr. Doom walking through the hall, it was super bad-boy and very well done. That scene is definitely one to watch again - if you have not seen the film due to poor reviews, I highly recommend you watch that bit.

The dialogue in 'Fantastic Four' could be compared by one made in middle school. I was literally covering my face in my hands in a few scenes. It was impossible to like/hate the characters when everything they say feels fake. This is evident in the scene when they explore the 'other dimension'. When Victor Doom falls in the green liquid, I did not flinch a muscle. I did not say 'Oh no! Not Victor!' like the filmmakers expected me to. And it was all due to the (very) poor dialogue.

But nothing beats the ending:

'That's fantastic.' 'Say that again.' 'That's fantastic.' 'Hmm…'

FANTASTIC FOUR Ponderous, pretentious and, most damning of all, just not much fun.
